If you have ever driven a Mazda MX-5 Miata, you understand the thrilling feeling of turning any road into a racetrack. This car offers an exhilarating ride, and it’s hard not to want to put the pedal to the metal; it’s no surprise, then, that this model actually has a long and successful racing history. Here Wellesley Mazda discusses its legacy, and how you can get a taste of what race car drivers experience with the 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Early Success

The Mazda MX-5 Miata first came onto the scene as a model for 1990, and it didn’t take long for it to get out on the track. In 1992, Randy Pobst drove it in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) event and won the Showroom Stock C (SSC) title. That was the first of three consecutive SSC titles for Mazda MX-5 Miata drivers, with Michael Galati winning the next two. Since then, this car has won several other SCCA championships.

Autocross Domination

With its twisting courses and emphasis on handling, the Mazda MX-5 Miata was made for autocross, and there the roadster has been a star. In 1993, Marla Davis won an SCCA Solo National Championship in C Stock Ladies in 1993, and the next year, Bob Klingler scored a C Stock open-class victory.

Rise of the Spec Miata

In 1998, Shannon McMasters began testing a new Spec Miata, and it was approved for competition in 1999. This proved to be a game-changer, as drivers were eager to get behind the wheel of these fun cars. In 2006, Spec Mazda became a national class in SCCA, and it is now one of the biggest categories in U.S. amateur racing.
